Paarl, derived from the Afrikaans means pearl. The third oldest town in South Africa and also the largest town in the Cape Winelands. The town came to existence when French Hugenots settled in the valley to farm produce. It claimed international attention when former president Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990.
